How Our Internet Speed Test Works

This tool measures your real-world connection performance by transferring data to and from Cloudflare's nearest edge server — one of the largest and fastest CDN networks on the planet with data centres in 310+ cities. Unlike ISP-sponsored tests that may optimise routes to inflate numbers, this gives you an honest measurement of what your network can actually deliver.

The test runs entirely inside your browser. No plugins, no installs, no personal data collected. We progressively increase file sizes during the download and upload phases to ensure the measurement saturates your link and produces reliable results, regardless of whether you're on a 5 Mbps mobile connection or a gigabit fibre line.

What Affects Your Speed?

Several factors impact the numbers you see. Your ISP's plan determines your maximum bandwidth ceiling. Wi-Fi quality, network congestion, distance to the server, VPN overhead, and even the time of day can cause real-world speeds to fall below your plan's advertised rate. Run the test on a wired Ethernet connection for the most accurate baseline reading.

Understanding Ping & Jitter

Latency (ping) is the round-trip time for a single packet to reach the server and return. Lower is better — under 20 ms is excellent for gaming and video calls. Jitter measures the variation in latency over multiple pings. High jitter means inconsistent performance, which can cause stuttering in real-time applications even if your average ping looks fine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this speed test accurate?

The test transfers real data to Cloudflare's nearest edge server, giving you an honest picture of your connection. For the most accurate results, close other bandwidth-heavy applications, use a wired connection, and run the test 2-3 times.

Does it use any of my data or privacy?

The test runs entirely in your browser. We don't store, log, or transmit your results. The only network traffic is the test data itself, which is transferred to Cloudflare's public speed-test endpoints.

Why is my speed lower than my ISP advertises?

ISP plans advertise "up to" speeds under ideal conditions. Wi-Fi interference, network congestion, router limitations, and VPN overhead commonly reduce real-world throughput.

How much data does a single test use?

A full download + upload cycle transfers roughly 40-50 MB. If you're on a metered connection, keep this in mind before running multiple tests.
